Revitalizing Downtown San Jose: The Santa Clara Corridor Project

Revitalizing Downtown San Jose: The Santa Clara Corridor Project

A major beautification effort is underway in downtown San Jose as the Santa Clara Corridor Project nears completion. With $800,000 in funding from the City of San Jose, the San Jose Downtown Association (SJDA), and other partners, the project focuses on enhancing the stretch of Santa Clara Street to unify the downtown area and boost foot traffic.

The initiative includes 17 distinct upgrades, such as:

  • Repainting building facades
  • Installing public murals
  • Improving storefront visibility and design
  • Activating underutilized spaces

This effort is part of a broader city strategy to improve walkability, support small businesses, and enhance public safety by creating more vibrant and well-lit areas.

The project is also seen as a key part of San Jose’s preparation for major upcoming events. With Super Bowl LX and the FIFA World Cup expected to bring more than 350,000 visitors to the Bay Area in 2026, improving downtown’s appeal and accessibility is a strategic priority.

A notable focus of the project has been on long-established businesses in the area. Several of the revitalized storefronts include legacy businesses that have served the downtown community for decades. By investing in their visibility and curb appeal, the project acknowledges their longstanding role in shaping the city’s identity.

This corridor revitalization also aligns with San Jose’s district stitching alignment plan, a broader effort aimed at connecting the downtown’s various neighborhoods and districts through cohesive design, infrastructure, and public space improvements.

The Santa Clara Corridor Project is one of several recent initiatives contributing to San Jose’s post-pandemic recovery, helping the city build toward a more vibrant, resilient, and welcoming downtown experience for both residents and visitors.
