Facchino Neighborhood Project Breaks Ground Near Berryessa BART
Change is underway in North San Jose as a longtime industrial site begins its next chapter. This week, local leaders and community members gathered to celebrate the start of demolition at 1655 Berryessa Road. Marking a major milestone in the transformation of the 13-acre property into the new Facchino Neighborhood.
The site, once home to the Facchino family’s trucking business, will soon be developed into a vibrant residential community featuring more than 700 new homes. The project is part of a larger vision to create a connected, walkable urban village surrounding the Berryessa BART station, which opened in 2020.
Property owner Bob Facchino, who purchased the land over 50 years ago, officially kicked off demolition himself. Taking a symbolic swing at the building that had served his business for decades. Over the years, the site has housed industrial tenants and even operated as a staging area during construction of the BART station. Now, it’s being reimagined to meet the growing housing needs of the region.
Two developers have already signed on for the first phase of construction:
Future phases of the Facchino Neighborhood will include an additional 338 apartment units and 62 for-sale homes, alongside plans for a neighborhood park and wetland area. The wetland feature will serve both an environmental and community purpose after part of the site was designated as a protected drainage area by the State Water Board.
While development costs remain a challenge, the Facchino Neighborhood represents significant progress in transforming underutilized land near major transit into much-needed housing. The project will bring new life to this corner of Berryessa and contribute to the city’s broader vision of creating thriving, connected neighborhoods near public transit.
