San Jose’s Poor House Bistro Makes Long-Awaited Trek to New Little Italy Location Tomorrow!

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA – JANUARY 5: Jay Meduri, owner of Poor House Bistro, stands by his New Orleans style bistro as it’s prepared on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2022, for its big move this Saturday in San Jose, Calif. (Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group)

Tomorrow (Saturday) morning, Poor House Bistro will make the journey to its new location in Little Italy. This San Jose institution has been serving New Orleans fare from the iconic Victorian-era home since 2005. Poor House Bistro owner, Jay Meduri, lived in the home before he turned it into the restaurant and live music venue that operates today.

The house itself has been uprooted and will be transferred to a new foundation starting at 7am, reaching its destination next to Henry’s Hi-Life around 9am.

This move will be accompanied by a New Orleans band set up near the Arena Green Park by the SAP Center. While there is no official parade on the docket, Meduri says that people can follow along behind the hauled house on the sidewalk and Henry’s Hi-Life will have its patio open around 9am to serve drinks while Pool House itself will be offering food for purchase.

The relocation of the Poor House Bistro property was prompted by the sale of the land to Google for its planned Downtown West campus project. This move will allow the restaurant to avoid operating in the center of a construction zone for the next ten years. A fun fact though, this will actually be the 3rd address for this Victorian home. Meduri’s grandparents bought the building when it was a sorority house on 11th Street near San Jose State and moved it to Autumn Street in the 1950s. Now its 3rd (and likely final) foundation will be set on West St. John St. in Little Italy.
